Hindsight Fashion: The Mini Backpack

20 Oct

Throughout the decades, teenagers have attempted to prove their coolness by wearing questionable accessories, hairstyles and items of clothing. Hindsight Fashion is a new section about those trends that, in Hindsight, we probably wish we hadn’t worn.

This week’s Hindsight Fashion is the Mini Backpack.

The Mini Backpack (any purse with two shoulder straps that is worn across the back) was a variation of the handbag which gained popularity during the 1990’s. The Mini Backpack was a prominent accessory in the movie Clueless. (Strangely, as I continue to explore the regrettable fashion trends of my adolescence, this movie keeps surfacing again and again.)

The Mini Backpack’s practicality was what made it so popular. Most styles had several compartments within which to keep your belongings organized, and the ability to divide the weight of the purse between both shoulders made it easy to carry. As I write this, I am realizing that the Mini Backpack might actually be the perfect accessory for my current lifestyle as a full-time Mommy. If it were not so far off trend, it would be an easy way to carry snacks, cell phone, keys, toys, diapers, wipes, and sippy cups to and from the park without dragging a caravan behind you.

In light of this revelation, I am going to proclaim the Mini Backpack the future must-have accessory of beleaguered Mommies everywhere. And hey, even if it doesn’t catch on, I’ll always have Cher Horowitz to keep me company.

So funny you should bring up how it would make a great mom-accessory! Just the other day I was thinking that while trying to balance my behemoth patent leather coach carry-all (gorgeous!) with the bucket car seat while shepherding the other two out of traffic. The purse kept sliding and knocking the car seat while on one shoulder and whacking my other son in the head while on the other shoulder. The mini-back pack in my closet is looking mighty appealing.

Love it! That’s hilarious! I recently decided to shelve my Louis (after much grief and deliberation) after realizing how silly it looked with diapers spewing out the top 😦 Phew. Balancing fashion and babies is a job unto itself 😉
