The Hindsight Notes: How Did You Meet Your First Love?

2 Oct

The Hindsight Notes is a recurring section created for all you readers desperate to participate in THL, but lacking time to write a full letter. Each Note is composed of a question. All you need to do is answer it, in the form of a comment (below).

This week’s topic is: How did you meet your first love? How old were you? What song was playing? What were you wearing? How do you remember that all-important moment?

As always, I’ll start us out…

When I was 15, my best friend Amy was dating an intern at a recording studio. One chilly Saturday in December, I got a phone call asking if I’d like to go visit the studio.

    Obviously a no-brainer.

A little punk rock band from my neighbourhood was recording their album at the time. I remember thinking how super cool and totally swoon worthy the lead singer was (I know, how cliche. The lead singer).

I gave him my phone number (land line of my parent’s house- no cells or texting back then!) and he spelled my name C-I-R-A instead of K-Y-R-A as he hurriedly scribbled it down. I think I called a name. I remember being so excited to receive that first phone call. For the next three years, I was totally that girlfriend, the suburban Yoko, in the front row of every show belting out the tunes.

i was 14 years old. we were at a mock legislature conference in the state capital, having dinner on the state house lawn. a friend of mine brought this guy over with her, introduced him around and we all started talking in that VERY DEEP AND PROFOUND WAY that smart-aleck tenth graders have. we immediately bonded over our quirky taste in music. as soon as he mentioned his favorite R.E.M. album, and it was the same as mine, i said, “i can tell we’re going to be friends.” and we were. from that point forward, we were inseparable, we were best friends. i crushed on him for years upon years, even as both of us dated other people. no matter what, he was that pure, unadulterated conception of first love for me. i thought that’s all it would ever be, too…

…until now. as i write this, fifteen years after that night on the state house lawn, he wakes me in the morning with a kiss on the shoulder. it’s a testament to love, loyalty and the power of that first bond.

Wow! What a story! It’s true: that first bond is something so powerful, and totally formative in our outlook on love for the rest of our lives. Thanks for sharing 🙂
